The Rupert River --

TO SMOKY HILL... Good full day, 8 hours moving ... August 1/a

Paddle 8 miles, a few swifts, stay left of island with the first rapids marked on the Fort Rupert 4-1s.

P 450 yards (in left small channel around the island mentioned above) Takes out on a grassy bank on the left just below a large rock, just left of midstream, just above a boulder choked area.

C.S. at far end.

Paddle 8-9 miles staying in the far left channel around all the large islands encountered. Turn up a very small channel on left, above where the main channel breaks into an island rapid (the top of Plum Pudding). 3 islands across the main channel can be seen as the turn is made. Follow the small channel for about 2 miles to the first rapid (just after a small burn area on the left).

P 300 yards on right (actually on island) at the first fast water The second landing (about 25 yards downstream of the first) being the better landing. Portage goes through an old burn. Puts into bay off to the side of the rapid. C.S good on trail between the first and second landing areas.

The rapid “Plum Pudding” that follows has two main parts separated by a large, relatively calmer expansion of the river. Both parts are shot down as close to the left shore as possible. We decided the best thing to do was to eddy hop, scouting piece by piece, because the rapid stretched for over a mile and was difficult to scout all at once. Most all previous sections have shot the entire stretch blind. However, at the bottom of the last pitch is a ledge which creates problems. If nothing else is scouted, at least pull out just above this last pitch and scout it because it’s tricky and no clear path down it. (The end of the rapid is visible from above this final drop). (’70 said poor C.S. in bay south of large island between Plum Pudding and Smoky Hill, or try N side of the island.) .
