Paddle following right shore after narrows in Hirondelle (3 miles after last C.S.) (Burn covers most of Hirondelle, Lac de la Passe & beginning of Monmort) Follow stream (not shown on 4-1s) out of pointed bay at SW end of Hirondelle (it empties into Lac de la Passe)
R Swift, hardly noticeable through big boulders.
R Run left of center pulling hard right into the center at bottom of rapid. Narrow and steep pitch, can see Lac de la Passe from the top. Shallow.
Paddle down Lac de la Passe (one rapid at the narrows in the middle of the lake). Stream out of Lac de la Passe to Monmort followed.
R Tricky (when shallow like this year) We ran right & then out to center at bottom threading the needle at the bottom
R Tricky & shallow. Left shore. Threading needle work (’70 ran on right)
R Ledge with a break at right center, run there.
P 150 yard portage on left about 20 yards above first fast water & puts in below. Goes around 2 rapids, rock piles.
CAMPSITE:
- On south side of Peninsula and a small sand beach facing south, 3-4 miles from the previous portage. NE of the “t” in Monmort on the 4-1s
- About 200 yds west of the above C.S. at the base of the bay that C.S. #1 faces (Clay & Bill)
The same old SW wind brought rain & clouds all day. We are now camped on Lake Monmort opposite Clay & Bill’s section who must have taken a rest day today. Hopefully we can get out of here early tomorrow and beat them down the lake because it would be a hassle to run into them while shooting & letting down rapids and portaging tomorrow. Today was a lot of lake paddling (against that nice headwind), and a couple real shallow dinky rapids. I scraped over about 3 rocks. More rain now. Everything is starting to get a musty smell not having had anything but rain for the past 3 days. We’re getting up about 5:30 and are off the campsite by 7. Today was a good half day. We ate at the campsite about 1 o’clock.
